Terms of Service
Last updated: February 22, 2026
1. Acceptance of Terms
By downloading, installing, or using BetterStage ("the App") or accessing the BetterStage website and dashboard at betterstage.app ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the App or Service.
We may update these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the App or Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
2. Description of Service
BetterStage is a macOS desktop workspace manager that organizes your open windows into named workspaces called "stages." The Service consists of:
- The macOS App — a native application requiring macOS 14 Sonoma or later that manages window positions, visibility, and layout on your Mac.
- The Web Dashboard — an online interface at betterstage.app for managing your account, subscription, and device licenses.
BetterStage uses the macOS Accessibility API to read and manipulate window positions. It does not require disabling System Integrity Protection (SIP) or any other system security feature.
3. Account Registration
Certain features of the Service require you to create an account. Account authentication is provided by Clerk, a third-party identity service. By creating an account, you agree to:
- Provide accurate and complete information during registration.
- Keep your account credentials secure and not share them with others.
- Accept responsibility for all activity that occurs under your account.
- Notify us promptly at support@betterstage.app if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.
You must be at least 13 years of age to create an account. If you are under 18, you represent that your parent or legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms on your behalf.
4. Free and Pro Tiers
BetterStage is available in two tiers:
Free Tier
Available at no cost with the following features:
- Up to 3 stages
- Snap zones for window positioning
- Keyboard shortcuts
- 1 device
Pro Tier
A paid subscription or one-time purchase that unlocks:
- Up to 9 stages
- Bento Box auto-tiling
- Snap Wheel radial zone picker
- Monitor exclusion
- Up to 2 devices per license
We reserve the right to modify the features included in each tier at any time. If we materially reduce Pro features, existing subscribers will retain their current feature set for the remainder of their billing period.
5. Device Licensing
Each Pro license permits activation on up to two (2) macOS devices simultaneously. The Free tier is limited to one (1) device. A "device" is a unique Mac identified by its hardware identifier.
You may deactivate a device from your dashboard at any time to free up a slot. Attempting to exceed your device limit will require deactivating an existing device before the new one can be activated.
Licenses are personal and non-transferable. You may not share, sell, or sublicense your BetterStage license to another person or entity.
6. Free Trial
All Pro plans include a 10-day free trial. During the trial period you have full access to all Pro features at no charge.
For subscription plans (monthly or annual), your payment method will be charged at the end of the trial period unless you cancel before the trial expires. You may cancel at any time during the trial from your dashboard without being charged.
Each account is eligible for one free trial. We reserve the right to limit or revoke trial access if we detect abuse, such as creating multiple accounts to obtain additional trials.
7. Payment Terms
All payments are processed securely by Stripe. BetterStage does not store your credit card information. Pro is available at the following price points:
- Monthly — $2.99/month, billed monthly
- Annual — $10.99/year, billed annually
- Lifetime — $24.99 one-time purchase
Prices are listed in US dollars and may be subject to applicable taxes depending on your jurisdiction. We reserve the right to change pricing at any time. Price changes for subscription plans will take effect at the start of your next billing cycle, and we will provide reasonable notice before any increase.
Auto-Renewal
Monthly and annual subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each billing period unless you cancel before the renewal date. You can cancel your subscription at any time from your dashboard or by contacting support@betterstage.app. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period — you retain access to Pro features until then.
Refund Policy
Because all Pro plans include a free trial period, we generally do not offer refunds for subscription payments. However, if you believe you were charged in error or have extenuating circumstances, please contact us at support@betterstage.app and we will review your request on a case-by-case basis. Lifetime purchases are eligible for a refund within 14 days of purchase if Pro features do not function as described.
8. Acceptable Use
You agree to use BetterStage only for its intended purpose as a desktop workspace manager. You may not:
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble the App, except to the extent permitted by applicable law.
- Modify, adapt, or create derivative works based on the App.
- Redistribute, sublicense, rent, or lease the App to third parties.
- Use the App to develop a competing product or service.
- Circumvent or attempt to circumvent licensing restrictions, device limits, or subscription validation.
- Use the Service to transmit malicious code or interfere with the operation of other users' systems.
- Create multiple accounts to abuse free trial eligibility.
9. macOS Permissions and Privacy
BetterStage requires three macOS system permissions to function:
- Accessibility — used exclusively to read and set window positions and sizes via the macOS Accessibility API.
- Input Monitoring — used exclusively to detect keyboard shortcuts and mouse events for stage switching and window management.
- Screen Recording — used exclusively to detect on-screen windows and generate thumbnail previews in the Stages Bar.
BetterStage uses these permissions solely for window management functionality. The App does not record your screen, log your keystrokes, capture screenshots, or transmit any visual or input data off your device. BetterStage does not collect telemetry, usage analytics, or personal data from your Mac. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
You may revoke any of these permissions at any time through macOS System Settings, though doing so will prevent BetterStage from functioning correctly.
10. Intellectual Property
BetterStage, including all code, design, graphics, logos, and documentation, is the intellectual property of BetterStage and its creators. All rights not expressly granted in these Terms are reserved.
Your purchase or subscription grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App on your personal devices in accordance with these Terms. This license does not convey any ownership rights in the App or Service.
11. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability
THE APP AND SERVICE ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.
BetterStage manipulates window positions and visibility using the macOS Accessibility API. While we take great care to ensure reliable operation, you acknowledge that:
- Moving or repositioning windows may cause certain applications to behave unexpectedly, particularly applications that respond to window geometry changes by reloading content or altering state.
- BetterStage is not responsible for data loss, application crashes, or unexpected behavior in third-party applications resulting from window management operations.
- macOS updates may affect the behavior of Accessibility APIs that BetterStage depends on, potentially causing temporary incompatibilities.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL BETTERSTAGE, ITS CREATORS, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, OR AGENTS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF DATA, LOSS OF PROFITS, OR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH YOUR USE OF THE APP OR SERVICE, REGARDLESS OF THE THEORY OF LIABILITY.
OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THESE TERMS OR THE APP SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO US IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM, OR TWENTY-FIVE US DOLLARS ($25.00), WHICHEVER IS GREATER.
12. Termination
You may stop using BetterStage at any time by uninstalling the App and canceling any active subscription from your dashboard.
We may suspend or terminate your account and access to the Service at our discretion if you violate these Terms, abuse the licensing system, or engage in conduct that we reasonably believe is harmful to other users or to the Service.
Upon termination, your license to use the App is revoked. The Free tier features will continue to function without an account, but Pro features will be disabled. Sections of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination — including intellectual property, limitation of liability, and governing law — will remain in effect.
13. Changes to Terms
We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where practicable, notify you via email or through the App.
Your continued use of the App or Service after revised Terms are posted constitutes your acceptance of the changes. If you do not agree with the updated Terms, you should discontinue use of the App and cancel your subscription.
14. Governing Law
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States and the State of California, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in California.
15. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that the remaining Terms remain in full force and effect.
